I had the privilege of meeting the author (Jaroslav Vajda) and composer (Carl Schalk) of this hymn several years ago at a hymn festival at Concordia Seminary. I recall singing this hymn as part of the Seminary Chorus (though I do not recall if that was part of the program for the festival). Pastor Vajda had a way of writing that was so intimately personal, yet so universally true for every Christian. In this hymn, he sweetly echoes the Good News of the Gospel of Christmas, that this Child is born for me. Pastor Vajda was called to be with Christ 2 1/2 years ago, and now sings with the angels, archangels and all the company of heaven… and I do hope this hymn is among the songs of that heavenly host.
Where Shepherds Lately Knelt is hymn 369 in the Lutheran Service Book.
